Dedicated servers: when a VPS is no longer enough

A dedicated server gives you a whole physical machine — every core, every gigabyte and the full disk bandwidth. It pays off for busy databases, game networks and steady heavy workloads; below are plans from budget to enterprise, sorted by price.

Dedicated vs VPS

On a VPS you share the hardware with other customers; on a dedicated server nobody else runs on the machine. That means predictable performance and more resources per dollar at the high end.

The trade-offs: setup can take hours instead of seconds, hardware faults are real events, and you usually commit to a month at a time.

What to look at

Compare the CPU generation (a new 8-core beats an old 16-core for most work), ECC memory, RAID with two disks, the network port and whether traffic is unmetered.

  • Setup fee — some budget offers charge one
  • IPMI or KVM console for remote rescue
  • DDoS protection included or extra
  • Contract term and cancellation

Questions people ask

Is a dedicated server worth it for one website?

Rarely. A good VPS handles most single sites. Dedicated makes sense with a big database, many sites, game servers or constant heavy CPU use.

What is a “virtual dedicated server”?

Marketing for a large VPS with dedicated CPU cores. It performs close to bare metal for many tasks, but it is still virtualised.

Do I get a GPU in a dedicated server?

Only in GPU models, which cost much more. For AI work compare them with hourly GPU clouds on our GPU page.
